Managing Multiple Gates and Doors from One Access Control System — Barsavosh Fanavaran guide

To run several doors and gates from one access control software, connect every gate to a single system so they work at the same time without conflicts, mark each gate as entry, exit or both, give each group its allowed hours, and let the guard watch every pass on one live screen. In Nooradio, the plan mostly depends on how many gates you have: Start covers up to 2, Pro up to 8 and Elite has no limit.

A single front door is easy. One reader, one list of cards, done. Things get messy as soon as a site grows a second and third access point: a staff door at the back, a vehicle barrier, a loading bay, a server room. When each of these runs on its own little controller and its own list, a deactivated card can still open one door while being refused at another. This guide shows how to plan and manage multi-door access control so that all your gates follow one set of rules.

What does multi-door access control actually mean?

In practice, a “gate” is any point where a card or tag is read and an allow-or-deny decision is made. It might be a glass lobby door, a turnstile at a factory entrance or a car park barrier. Multi-door access control means all of those points report to one place. When an administrator blocks a lost card, the change applies to every door at once rather than relying on someone to remember each controller separately.

Nooradio runs on a single computer at your premises, linked to the reader installed at each gate. It controls several gates simultaneously without them interfering with each other. If two people badge in at two different doors in the same second, each gate decides independently and both events land in the history as separate records. People, cards and tags are defined once and recognised at every gate.

Map your gates before choosing access control software

Before you think about plans or hardware, walk the site and list every access point. It is the quickest way to find out how many gates you really need to manage and which doors genuinely need control. Here is a hypothetical example for a small business park building shared by several tenants:

Gate Purpose Direction Who When
Main lobby turnstile Staff and tenants in Entry only All tenants Working days
Lobby exit turnstile Staff and tenants out Exit only All tenants Any time
Underground car park barrier Vehicles Both Tag holders Working days
Rear service door Cleaning and deliveries Both Facilities team Early morning
Comms room Sensitive area Both IT staff As scheduled

That is five gates, so the Start plan with its limit of 2 is too small, while Pro with up to 8 covers today’s needs and leaves room for a new tenant floor. Larger campuses or sites that will keep growing are better served by Elite, which has no gate cap.

Separate entry and exit doors: setting direction per gate

Many buildings use one door to come in and another to go out, so that queues don’t collide at rush hour. If the software has no idea which door is which, reports become confusing: someone shows three “passes” and you can’t tell whether they are inside or outside. From the Pro plan, Nooradio lets you set every gate to entry, exit or both, so live monitoring and history show each event with the correct direction.

Practical rules of thumb:

  • If a door is physically one-way, for example a reader mounted only on the outside, configure it the same way in the software so the data matches reality.
  • Low-traffic doors such as a store room or plant room are usually best left as “both”; building separate lanes for them rarely makes sense.
  • A car park with a shared lane for vehicles in and out can be one gate set to “both”; two physical lanes are better defined as two gates.
  • Name each gate so a guard knows instantly where it is. “North lobby entry” beats “Gate 3” every time.

Group schedules across many doors

With multiple doors, not everyone should pass through every door at every hour. Rather than writing rules person by person, group people and give each group its allowed times, including weekdays and public holidays. In Nooradio, groups and access hours are available from Pro. A cleaning contractor group might be allowed in early mornings only, while the night shift is limited to its own window. Our guide to access schedules and user groups covers how to design these rules.

For an open day or an event, a single gate can be switched to open entry mode (Pro and above): every card registered in the software opens that gate, an unregistered card still doesn’t, and all other doors keep their normal rules.

One guard, several doors: live view and manual release

A guard can’t stand at every door. That is what the live view is for. In every Nooradio plan, each pass, allowed or denied, in or out, appears instantly with the gate’s name, triggers a sound alert you can silence, and can run full-screen on the guard station monitor.

Operators work with fewer rights than administrators: they watch passes and can release a door by hand from within the program, for a visitor or a delivery, without touching card or schedule settings. This is also included in all plans. See guard station monitoring for layout and shift handover tips.

What happens when one gate loses its connection?

The more gates you have and the further apart they are, the more likely it is that one cable or network link fails at some point. In Nooradio, if the connection to the PC drops, the gates keep making the right allow-or-deny decisions on their own: valid cards open, invalid cards don’t. That behaviour is the same in every plan. While a gate is disconnected, its events won’t show live on the guard’s screen, so a door that suddenly goes quiet is a reason to check the link. More detail is in our article on access control reliability when offline.

Choosing a plan by number of gates

Need Start Pro Elite
Simultaneous control from one software ✓ ✓ ✓

Gates decide on their own if the PC link drops ✓ ✓ ✓
Manual door release; admin and operator roles ✓ ✓ ✓
Entry, exit or both per gate — ✓ ✓
Groups, allowed hours, open entry mode — ✓ ✓
Parking capacity management — — ✓
Maximum gates (controllers) 2 8 No cap

A note on Start: two gates suit a small office with a front door and a staff door, but per-gate direction and group schedules are not part of it. If separating entries from exits matters to you, begin with Pro. Parking capacity management, which automatically controls how many vehicles are inside until they leave, is an Elite feature; our page on parking access control explains it.

Rollout checklist for a multi-gate site

  1. List every access point and give it a clear, human name.
  2. Set each gate’s direction (entry, exit, both) to match the physical layout.
  3. Group people and define allowed hours and holidays per group.
  4. Split roles: administrators manage cards and rules, guards only monitor and release doors.
  5. Test every gate with one valid and one invalid card and confirm both show on the live view.
  6. Deliberately disconnect one gate during a quiet period so guards see how it behaves.
  7. Set up backups; Pro and Elite add scheduled automatic backups with several copies.

Already keeping your card list in a spreadsheet or a legacy system? P-Soft can transfer it into Nooradio; your plan or contract defines how much of it is moved. Managing the system remotely from a web browser, on more than one PC, is coming soon. Nooradio works with smart cards and tags only, which keeps the setup simple to run day to day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one access control software manage several doors at once?

Yes. All your gates run side by side in Nooradio without clashing, and each card is defined once and recognised at every gate.

How many gates can Nooradio handle?

Start allows a maximum of two gates and Pro a maximum of eight; Elite sets no limit.

Can I make one door entry-only and another exit-only?

Yes. From the Pro plan you can mark each gate as entry, exit or both, so every pass is recorded with the right direction.

Does a door lock everyone out if its network link fails?

No. When the connection to the PC drops, the gate keeps deciding correctly by itself: valid cards open it and invalid cards don’t, in every plan.

Can a guard open a door remotely from the software?

Yes. In all plans, operators and guards can release a door manually from the software without having access to card or schedule settings.
